"Emerging & Fresh Expressions of Church
of the catholic and contemplative traditions"

with Simon Rundell, Michael Volland, Ian Mobsby, Tessa Holland & Philip Roderick

Over the last year, a number of new and exciting emerging churches or fresh expressions of church drawing on the specifically catholic and/or contemplative traditions have developed and joined other emerging churches coming from or out of a more evangelical perspective. These voices are few - but are nevertheless important voices. This day will then give room to explore how Emerging & Fresh Expressions of Church drawing on the catholic and contemplative traditions bring particular resources to engage with those who are spiritually searching and what it means to be church.

Explorations include input from Simon Rundell of Blessed in Gosport and the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage, Michael Volland, a pioneer minister working with Gloucester Cathedral, Ian Mobsby of Moot London, Tessa Holland and Philip Roderick of Contemplative Fire.

"Reframing Leadership"

with Maggi Dawn and Doug Gay

As money for fully paid staff is an increasing luxury, and as the church is seemingly in increasing decline, how can we faithfully re- imagine church leadership and ministry today? And what would an authentic model of leadership look like today in a society where suspicion of hierarchy and of institutions is increasing? What does it mean to be ordained leader and be lay leader? And are these terms even useful today?

Following on from last years exploration of the reframing of leadership within the emerging church this day will focus on the challenges today's culture and the emerging church bring to leadership in more traditional and established churches.

Maggi Dawn is Chaplain of Robinson College in Cambridge, she has also been involved in the alt.worship world for many years and also speaks regularly at Greenbelt. Doug Gay is a lecturer in practical theology at the University of Glasgow. He was also part of the late, late service, an alternative worship group based in Glasgow and is ordained in the United Reformed Church.

"The Entrepreneur Imperative" MP3s

with Bill Bolton

3xmp3s of talks and powerpoint slides. This important day explored how emerging church practitioners could utilise entrepreneurial skills and understanding to assist innovation.

Bill leads the field on thinking about entrepreneurial talent. He has been closely involved in the 'Cambridge Phenomenon' - he set up the St. John's Innovation Centre which now has an international reputation for generating new businesses and nurturing entrepreneurial talent; it helped to launch about 500 businesses - 2 businesses a week for 5 years. He was a UNESCO professor of Innovation and Technology Transfer and is a specialist in Business Incubators. He has written three books, and has developed an entrepreneur evaluation tool that identifies people’s entrepreneur potential and also that of entrepreneur enablers. While his background is in business, he sees entrepreneurs as working with three kinds of capital – economic, social, and spiritual. He has also recently written a grove booklet on entrepreneurs and the church.

A changing world is the entrepreneur’s natural habitat. Business, mission, spirituality, social transformation are all environments where there is huge change. What might happen if we can encourage more entrepreneurial thinking and activity?

Does the emerging church need leaders? Isn't it all about co-producing stuff where we are all 'leaders'
Or is it about renewing leadership, making it less of a one man band and more inclusive and powersharing?
How are we to develop emerging churches/fresh expressions that allow all people to participate and use all their gifts rather than just the few ‘leaders who do everything?
How do we avoid power abuse by over zealous leaders?

"A theology of the Emerging Church"
with Dr Pete Rollins MP3s

The Study day includes 2 talks and question and answer sessions with Dr Pete Rollins where he explored some of the theological implications coming out of the praxis of emerging church projects.

Summary of the day

What is the emerging church? Is it a neo-evangelical and/or neo-catholic sociological strategy, designed to address the decline in church attendance, or is it a radical re-envisaging of faith that communicates a vital message of transformation to the wider church? In other words, will this fragile, fractured movement be one day remembered, if it is remembered at all, as a re-imagining of the ‘body of Christ’ as community for a post-modern context?

Dr Peter Rollins from the Ikon community in Northern Ireland (a group which describes itself as iconic, apocalyptic, heretical, emerging and failing) is a philosopher who has come to believe that the emerging church presents a singular, unprecedented opportunity to transform the theological and moral architecture of the Christian community. By combining his research into mysticism and post-modern theory, alongside his development of an emerging church community, Peter promises to present what he believes is a vital message concerning both the possibilities and dangers, which the emerging church currently faces.

His challenge is as simple as it is profound… if we do not become theologically self-aware the emerging church will end up as little more than the latest attempt to make church cool. This event built on the acclaimed Seminar that Peter gave at last year’s Greenbelt Arts Festival. The study day was hosted by moot.net, the central London based alternative worship community in Westminster, at St Matthews Conference Centre.
