Materials for Mini-Moots
Preparatory Reading from The Undefended Life before Mini Moot:
Chapter Four:
http://simonpwalker.blogspot.com/2010/04/narratives-of-redemption-and-centrality.html
‘If the Gospel is to have redemptive power over the human condition, the Gospel must centrally address the issue of trust. It must have the power to reverse our experience of broken trust and bring us to a reality where we can fundamentally trust again’.
In this chapter Simon offers four ego patterns that emerge from different levels of trust we might place in ourselves and others. He uses four colours Green, Blue, Yellow and Red to describe four main types of relating. Read through all four types and reflect on which one is closest to the way you to relate to yourself and to others.
Mini Moot on 6th December:
- Discuss your general response to the reading – do you agree with Simon’s central premise of the centrality of trust to the gospel?
- Which of the four ego patterns do each of you most identify with and why?
- Choose one of Simon’s descriptions of an individual’s encounter with Christ and ask one person to read this aloud to the rest of the group, pause to reflect on what you have heard, give time for each person to share how they identify with this person’s encounter with Christ.
- If there is time you can choose another encounter and do the same thing.
- Light two candles for hope and peace.
- Finish with a moment of silent contemplation and prayer.
Mini Moot on 20th December:
- Each person share which gospel text from the first three weeks of advent has been most relevant to them and why.
- In what ways are we being challenged to live the undefended life?
- Light four candles – for hope, peace, love and joy
- Someone read the gospel text for the final week of advent, Luke 2: 5-25.
Pause for a minutes silence. Someone read the explanation and reflections that go with the text. Pause for a minutes silence. Someone read the gospel text again. Pause for a minutes silence. Share short reflections from the group.
- Close with prayer.
